Buky Grinberg "Performance & installation"

04–20.11.1977
de Appel, Brouwersgracht 196, Amsterdam

November 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 : performances November 4-20: installation 'The room was totally covered by white plastic. The audience (limited to 40) got inside from the balcony by ladders. After they took seats, the ladders were lifted up. Suddenly, green water started to flow from the bottom of the walls. It slowly flooded the floor and kept rising. Grinberg, wearing white plastic clothes and a white mask of his own face, was sitting on a two meter high platform situated in front of the audience. He painted in green, from top to bottom, 40 small David sculptures. After the water had stopped to flow - reaching almost the seats of the chairs - and all the statues had been painted green, Grinberg got down from the platform and gave each person a statue. The remainder of the audience watched the performance from the balcony or on a video monitor in a nearby room. Six tortoises with six daily objects stuck to their shields, were put in separated transparent boxes. The boxes were hanging down from the ceiling above the audience's heads. The walls and the floor were completely covered with white, soft cloth. Grinberg was lying naked on the floor in a corner of the space, his body facing the skirting. After the audience had entered the space, Grinberg would start to roll over the floor in all directions; he thus forced the public to move. During non-performance time, photographs showing Grinberg's body were scattered on the floor.' (Buky Grinberg, press release De Appel, November 1977.)
